8 Exhibitors, including 2 schools, registered 138 entries in the Illawarra Section at the September 2023 Royal Adelaide Show, with the cattle lining up for Judge Mr Paul Harrison of ‘Breckney Hill’, Heddon-on-the-Wall, Northumberland, UK.
We thank ICSA Federal for contributing to the SA Branch’s subsidy that significantly reduced the travel costs for our judge from England. Paul was meant to come in 2020 when Illawarras were the feature breed, but we all know how & why that went pear-shaped; therefore the RAS couldn’t pay for him to come this year because they had the Ayrshire Feature Breed’s international judge on whom to focus.
The weather turned on a coolish spring week that was more like a comfy UK spring, and it chilled other family visitors from Malaysia who have year-round heat & humidity.
It’s with much appreciation that we acknowledge Stan Johnston of Jondene Stud for solo trecking all the way from Imbil, Queensland (NW of the Sunshine Coast) with 3 cattle in his goose-neck horse float.
Stans’ daughter Crystal, along with Jock Johnston and Lloyd Peters flew in judging morning, and out again that same night.
Tony Hayes came over from Victoria to watch daughter Zoe judge Jerseys, and was able to see the Illawarra judging while catching up with Ian Collins of ‘Churchroyd’, Yorkshire, UK, who had accompanied Paul Harrison to Australia.

At this year’s Royal Adelaide, SA members celebrated the 100th year since the formation of the SA Branch. To mark this occasion commemorative medallions were purchased, and Branch President Warren Doecke presented one of these to judge Paul Harrison. Exhibitors and SA Branch members also received the medallions, and there are more available for purchase by getting in touch with any member.
Much time was spent setting up a display covering the history, shows and cattle in SA.
