Mt Pleasant, March 19th 2022.
The support around the ring with some ‘old’ faces and exhibitors finding their way back to Mt Pleasant, along with the contingent of little tackers attached to the exhibiting families, made for a lively chatty reminiscing day on Saturday March 19th as the 60th year of the Illawarra Feature Show was celebrated. Colin Altmann, only having lost his wife Maureen just over 2 weeks before, made an appearance, proudly watching his son David judge the exhibits. Colin is the only remaining member of the committee that initiated the first Illawarra Feature Show in 1961.
David Altmann, “Blackwood Park”, Murray Bridge officiated over 55 entries paraded by 7 exhibitors.
David commented that “the quality of the cattle was very good right down the line”. He was pleased with the dairy quality and the udders, especially of the Senior and Reserve Champion cows. “The Intermediate Champion heifer was extremely well balanced, an extremely good dairy heifer, and the Reserve will make a good cow down the track. The two Juvenile heifers were outstanding, with tremendous capacity & width, and I look forward to seeing them as they develop.” Five of the 7 exhibitors took home broad ribbons.
On the day there was some photographic memorabilia available to reminisce over, and the traditional handing around of the box of Langhorne Creek grapes by the Follett and Cleggett families was much appreciated.
The following night a good gathering of people enjoyed pizzas while flipping through 6 of Colin Altmann’s impeccably kept and presented ‘Show history’ photo albums and scrap books that went back many decades.
