Mt Pleasant Feature Show, March 20th 2021.
After 2 years of a ‘show drought,’ there was quite a bit of excitement as six exhibitors presented 29 cattle to Judge Mr. Graeme Hamilton, “Hamilton’s Run,” OB Flat, SA, on a perfect autumn day.
One could have been forgiven for thinking there is any such thing as a worldwide pandemic going on, with the day seeing between 6,000 and 7,000 attendees, which is the number for a typical year. The highest number at any one time was just under 5,000, which, to comply with COVID restrictions, was the maximum permitted. The many COVID Marshals on the grounds had little to do apart from observing because everybody was accustomed to COVID-19 compliance.
The Show Society executive is extremely grateful to officials, exhibitors, and attendees for making the show such a resounding success.
We, the exhibitors, are appreciative of the Society for managing to stage the show under trying conditions: first, achieving their COVID compliance, and second, moving into a shell (eventually it will be called a new office) a few days prior to the show, with scant furnishings and equipment.
Comments from the Judge.
"Thank you for the privilege of joining the dedicated Illawarra exhibitors at the 2021 Mt Pleasant Show, which was more than just about the cattle. It was time taken from the farming routine to have fun, a necessary time to see other cattle, to discuss breeding experiences, and to foresee helpful strategies for herd improvement.
My judging task was easier because each class contained worthy placegetters, which combined to make tight championship competitions for the Junior, Intermediate, and Senior sections. I found great examples of balanced dairy cows with ideal body conditions for their age and stage of lactation.
It was especially pleasing to see many durable cows in the very senior classes carrying their age and lifetime production well. I was looking for functional red dairy cows that avoid trait extremes, are bright and alert, move effortlessly through their daily routine, and are a pleasure to work with. I regard these cows as profitable and rewarding.
I wish the breeders success in their pursuit of breed improvement. I know their diligence will leave no stone unturned on the path ahead. Thank you to all the exhibitors and stewards for their hospitality and friendship."
