The Sunshine Coast show season rolled on last weekend, with the Maleny Show held on Friday, June 2nd under beautiful blue skies, a little different to Gympie show a fortnight prior. Also different was the show team of Jondene with only four animals backing up from Gympie. Riverwood also took the opportunity to put forward a number of new show team members to Judge, Jason Smith (Baromi Illawarras & Jerseys). 53 Illawarras in total from 8 exhibitors paraded before Jason who took time out from his one-man 300 milking herd operation at Cooriemungle, Victoria.
Ten minutes from the Twelve Apostles in South West Victoria, Jason’s leased farm is right on a very busy highway, making for some interesting stories with tourist buses dropping in to the dairy for a looksee uninvited and also some stressful moments dealing with the large amount of passing traffic. Jason is originally from northern Victoria, where he began farming on his own eight years ago at just 23 after completing a degree in Agricultural Science and Business. He is a fifth generation dairy farmer but due to succession planning issues, didn’t get a chance to take over any of the family farms so started out on his own. Jason bought his first stud Jersey at 14yrs of age and his first Illawarra stud animal at 16yrs with both those families ‘Love Lies’ (Jersey) and ‘Rosette’ (Illawarra), his most numerous and much-admired animals.
The Jondene and Riverwood studs fought out the first broad ribbon, with Riverwood’s under 12 months heifer, Riverwood Model 25, being rewarded with the Championship over Jondene Velda 12 as Reserve Champion. These two heifers continue the success of two well-known cow families at Riverwood and Jondene.
Riverwood Ailene 5 and Riverwood Faith 6, 1st and 2nd in Class 6, heifer 2.5yrs & U3yrs in milk, were named Champion and Reserve Champion Junior respectively.
Two animals from the Ledger string, also fought out Champion Cow with Riverwood Thelma 6 triumphing over Riverwood Prue 4.
The annual battle between Riverwood and Jondene for Champion Butterfat Cow in the on-ground 24hr milking competition went to Jondene with Jondene Buttercup 88 producing 1.32kgs of Fat.
