The All Breeds Calf Day was held on the 3rd October, 2015 at the Malanda Showgrounds. The Illawarra section was extremely well supported with 5 exhibitors presenting 41 calves to the judge, Mr Keith Dorries, Panorama Stud, Oakey. 19 children aged 16 years or under dominated proceedings by parading the majority of the calves. For several of these children it was their first experience in the show ring but all the children worked really hard and made a great impression on both the judge and the spectators.
Keith said the opportunity to travel to Malanda is always a trip that he enjoys.
“A pleasant environment, wonderful hospitality, fantastic passionate Illawarra people and an outstanding display of well-presented calves made the trip most worthwhile.
The young paraders classes at Malanda are always competitive with lots of enthusiastic leaders making it a great spectacle and very difficult to judge but leaving an impression of a great future for Dairy cattle in North Queensland.
The quality of the heifer classes was very good with some outstanding winners. The Junior Champion and Reserve were long clean heifers with the winner having an advantage in body depth and her overall balance making her one to keep an eye on in the future.
The Senior Champion displayed great dairy strength to have the advantage over the well grown and stylish Reserve Champion.
In making the Senior Champion Supreme Exhibit she displayed a strong muzzle, wide chest, open rib and a correct angle to her rump in a close placing over the lovely Junior Champion.
Congratulations to all exhibitors.”
