Royal Adelaide Show September 2015
Illawarra Judge Mr Matthew Hayward, ‘Westwood Farm’, Nottinghamshire, England, had 15 exhibitors to face as he judged the Illawarra Feature Show.
“Having been looking forward to judging the Illawarra classes at Adelaide for some time the shorts and t-shirts were packed early; disappointingly these had to be put aside for jeans & hoodies for the first few days. However this proved to be the only disappointment for the week, getting the opportunity to judge some great classes of cattle, and it was reassuring to see them go on to the interbreeds in the afternoon with some success. Not just the Juvenile Champion scooping the Interbreed Championship, but also Intermediate and Supreme Illawarra coming close to the top honours.
Once my judging commitments were over it was fantastic to meet all the breeders and exhibitors, as in the UK normally over a beer sitting behind the cows .
One noticeable difference from shows at home however is the attractions of the showground. It’s great to see how the public are encouraged to find out about local agriculture and entertained around the main arena, whereas in the UK it’s much more farm-based, full of rows of machinery, semen companies and everything in-between. I personally think that a middle ground on this is where the shows need to be.
Still having a few days in Australia we’re looking forward to seeing some more of the country and the sights, hoping to get a photograph of the bunyip we’ve heard so much talk about.”

Being the ‘Once every 5 years’ Feature Show, and considering the generosity of so many sponsors, it’s fitting that their names are mentioned in each class. Other sponsors for hospitality were ICSA Federal, Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society of SA, Lion, Volac, Vic & Mart-Marie Bissett, and Farm Animal Resource Management at Yass.
Following judging was a presentation TO the RA&HS. The Shillabeer family of Liberton Illawarra Shorthorn Stud won 2 all-breed perpetual trophies in the early 1920s, and after having ceased dairying in 1940, left these trophies ‘lying around’ for a few generations. Recently Neil Shillabeer, recognising the significance of these trophies offered them to the RA&HS for the museum.
Pictured are Jill and Neil Shillabeer presenting these cups back to the RA&HS Chief Executive John Rothwell.
