Along with Gympie and Maleny, Nambour is the third show in Sunshine Coast/Wide Bay area which still provides a good display of dairy cattle. The highlight of these shows has been the success of the Illawarra breed in Supreme Competition. Jersey Feature Shows at both Gympie and Maleny provided strong competition.
Four exhibitors provided a showing of 32 Illawarras, paraded before first time judge, James Johnston, “Hillcrest” Malanda, in inclement weatherat start of judging, but cleared by mid morning to the odd light shower. It was a good showing for a first time judge to get real judging experience. James acquitted himself well.

Reserve Champion Cow – Riverwood Bonnie 2 (Venvale Prudino), exhibited by Ledger Family. Riverwood Bonnie 2 was at her first show, and traces back through Moyola, Wilmington, Lightwood Park, Tabbagong, Sunny View, Yarranvale to late George Gwynne’s Trevor Hill Bonnie. Trevor Hill Bonnie was one of the great production cows in the Illawarra breed in the 50’s – 60’s era.
After winning the Illawarra group of 3 cows as well as the group 3 heifers, Riverwood went on to win both the Supreme ribbons for these classes. The Supreme Champion Group of 3 Cows were Riverwood Bonnie 2, Riverwood Joan 2, and Riverwood Doris 13.
The Supreme Group of 3 Heifers at Nambour comprised Riverwood Moss 2, Riverwood Sapphire 6, and Riverwood Sapphire 7. In an impressive effort Riverwood won the Supreme Group of 3 Heifers at all 3 shows, involving 5 different heifers, the other two were Riverwood Sapphire 4, and Riverwood Model 13. The three Sapphire heifers are 2 daughters and a granddaughter of Venvale Sapphire 18, Reserve Champion at Brisbane a few years ago. Riverwood Model 13 is a daughter of Riverwood Model 4, sold to Moyola Stud at the Toowoomba Impact Sale in 2013. The star of this impressive group of heifers, Riverwood Moss 2 is out of a White Park bred cow.
With such success in the interbreed competition at these 3 shows, from a breed perspective point of view it was pleasing at all three shows to see entries above 37.5%.
