Toowoomba Royal is over for another year, finishing with a heavy storm, which is a little different from the flooding rains that arrived last year a few hours after the show closed.
Like most shows around Australia, numbers are continuing to drop. The Illawarra breed was highest numerically, with 55 heads entered, but three-day sickness kept a few animals in their stalls. Nine exhibitors paraded.
The Illawarra judge was Mrs Wendy Harker from the Waikato in New Zealand. Wendy and her husband David milk 470 cows, including 50 Milking Shorthorn. Wendy is a Royal Judge of both Holsteins and Milking Shorthorn and an all-breeds classifier.
The show highlight for the Illawarra judging was the success of younger breeders Rob & Jo Lindsay and Clinton Vonhoff. The Lindsays exhibited Junior Champion Heifer St Andrews Dale 84, who went on to win Reserve Supreme Junior Junior Champion and Reserve Supreme Junior Udder. Dale, Vonhoff’s Reserve Champion Heifer, Myall Jester Hellen 2, and Henry’s Tara Pat 6, won the Reserve Supreme Group of Three Heifers.
