Heavy consistent showers in the lead up to the 2013 Maleny Show, dampened spirits of organisers but not competitors. Judging morning on Friday, May 31st presented overcast with the showers occurring just prior to and during the first class but by the second and third classes paraders and judge were dashing for raincoats or just giving up. Thankfully the weather cleared a little as the senior classes progressed.
Judge, Rob Lindsay of Waraba Stud, Warwick, was presented with 44 Illawarras and in a tight tussle awarded Mt Vista April owned by Rolly and Sharyn Voss of Glamorgan Vale, Senior Best Udder and Champion Cow.
While April had a very successful 2012 show season, she presented in tremendous form and looks to not only continue but improve on last year's results.
Riverwood Lucy 2 (Ledger Family) was named Reserve Champion.
F S Johnston & Sons took both Junior broad ribbons with Jondene Blossom 11 being named Champion and Jondene Jackie 7 the Reserve.
F S Johnston & Sons were also successful in the Champion Juvenile with Jondene Kay 16 with the Ledger Family's Riverwood Lyndal 6 in the Reserve position.
The Inter-breed classes carried out on Saturday, saw a reverse of the Illawarra champions with Riverwood Lucy 2 being named Supreme Champion Cow and Supreme Champion Udder ahead of Mt Vista April in the Reserve position. Jondene Blossom 11 was awarded Supreme Intermediate Champion.
The On-Ground milking competition involving all breeds is hotly contested at Maleny, particularly between the Ledger and Johnston camps. For the uninitiated, the competition is carried out over 24 hours with a strip-out of animals at 6pm on the Wednesday, before milkings at 6am and 6pm on the Thursday.
Park Lane Sovereign 88 (Ledger Family) was awarded the coveted prize of Champion Butterfat Cow across all breeds producing 1.98 kgs of Fat at an average of 5.1% from 38.85 litres of milk. She placed second in the Most Milk and Most Protein.
Her daughter, Riverwood Sovereign 6 (Den Dia Partnership) was named Champion Butterfat Heifer producing 1.21 kgs of Fat at an average of 5%.
F S Johnston & Sons' Jondene Beauty 33 was Reserve Champion Butterfat Cow but was named Most Milk Champion and Highest Protein Champion with figures of 40.66 litres milk, 1.7 kgs Fat 1.45 kgs Protein.
Beauty lead Jondene's team of three to a win producing 107 litres in the 24 hours
